What is a Live-In Aid?

Live-in aides provide 24×7 care for family members living at their property. Property owners should have in place the appropriate forms, policies and procedures so that reasonable accommodations can be made when tenants request live-in aides.

Caregivers may include family, friends or professional healthcare workers; any caregiver must possess a valid employment relationship and pass a criminal background check before being considered as such.

Helping Hands

Helping Hands is a non profit organization started by an inspiring high school junior who enjoys helping others and has extensive experience managing finances, marketing and social media. She is an invaluable member of our group and plans on majoring in business at college while continuing her dedication to aiding those less fortunate.

Oxygen is essential to our body cells’ health, and this Helping Hand outlines what you should do if your child has been prescribed oxygen at home.

An implanted port is a device and catheter (tube) surgically installed under your child’s skin that makes treatment less frequent by eliminating the need to start IVs every time an IV treatment is required. This Helping Hand explains what an implanted port is, its functions and care.

Sleeping your baby on their back reduces the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). This Helping Hand will demonstrate how to safely lay them down for nap time.

Companionship

Companions are individuals who share time together, accompany them on various activities and aid them with daily living tasks. While companionship often refers to romantic relationships, it can also mean friendship or platonic bonds – often people looking for companionship prefer it over long-term commitment such as marriage.

There are 258 registered vehicles and 13 are motorbikes. FHEO’s interpretation that spouses cannot qualify as live-in aides was overruled, as it was “clearly incorrect and inconsistent with regulatory definition of live-in aide, HUD Handbook guidance on this matter, case law regarding family members serving as live-in aides, as well as legislative history of live-in aide requirement”. Owners should carefully review their occupancy policies to ensure that they do not restrict family members of live-in aides who receive assistance through programs like Section 8, 202 PRAC and 811 from living in units as long as their services continue and the live-in aide remains a tenant in the property. Furthermore, an addendum to the lease should explicitly state this fact and state how long a family member can remain as long as the live-in aide continues providing their services – otherwise any potential conflicts of interest would need to be cleared.

Physical Assistance

Live-in aides are highly trained individuals who provide home health services such as meal preparation, bathing, medication reminders and client monitoring. They often detect changes in routine for their patients quickly and can give family members and SelectCare staff valuable insight into their loved one’s condition.

Property owners should verify that individuals applying to become live-in aides meet HUD criteria, including verifying they will only reside in the housing unit for as long as a disabled resident needs their services. Spouses may qualify, provided the property owner can verify they do not owe financial support to either tenant and solely exist for providing home health care services to provide home health aide services.

Understanding how to accurately qualify a live-in aide will ensure the safety of tenants while adhering to affordable housing regulations. Contact Preferred Compliance Solutions to gain more insight into certifying an alive-in aide for your property.

24 Hour Care

Live-in aides provide round-the-clock monitoring and care, but this option can be more costly as Medicare does not typically cover it or long-term care insurance does not usually cover it.

Live-in aides are assigned directly to clients’ homes and must have private sleeping quarters and an eight-hour break every 24 hours; agencies like Visiting Angels provide weekly schedules so the aide is not working without taking time off for breaks.

Some families opt to hire a home attendant actively monitoring their loved one during the night for safety and to mitigate sundowning or any potential for agitation at night. While this may present challenges for home caregivers, most agencies will work with families to find solutions that best suit them and their family.
